Trading off logging overhead and coordinating overhead to achieve efficient rollback recovery

چکیده
In the rollback recovery of large-scale long-running applications in a distributed environment, pessimistic message logging protocols enable failed processes to recover independently, though at the expense of logging every message synchronously during fault-free execution. In contrast, coordinated checkpointing protocols avoid message logging, but they are poor in scalability with a sharply increased coordinating overhead as the system grows. With the aim of achieving efficient rollback recovery by trading off logging overhead and coordinating overhead, this paper suggests a partitioning of the system into clusters, and then presents a scheme to implement the conversion between these overheads. Using the proposed conversion, coordination can be introduced to reduce the unbearable logging overhead found in some systems, whereas proper logging can be employed to alleviate the unacceptable coordinating overhead in others. Furthermore, heuristics are introduced to address the issue of how to partition the system into clusters in order to speed up the recovery process and to improve recovery efficiency. Performance evaluation results indicate that our scheme can lower the overall system overhead effectively. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

متن کاملReduced Overhead Logging for Rollback Recovery in Distributed Shared Memory
Rollback techniques that use message logging and deterministic replay can be used in parallel systems to recover a failed node without involving other nodes. Distributed shared memory (DSM) systems cannot directly apply message-passing logging techniques because they use inherently nondeterministic asynchronous communication. This paper presents new logging schemes that reduce the typically hig...
متن کاملEfficient Transparent Optimistic Rollback Recovery for Distributed Application Programs
Existing rollback-recovery methods using consistent checkpointing may cause high overhead for applications that frequently send output to the “outside world,” since a new consistent checkpoint must be written before the output can be committed, whereas existing methods using optimistic message logging may cause large delays in committing output, since processes may buffer received messages arbi...
متن کاملImplementation and Performance of Transparent Rollback-recovery in Manetho
We describe the implementation and performance of rollback-recovery in Manetho. During failure-free operation, Manetho maintains an antecedence graph which records the \happened before" relation between certain events in the distributed computation. The antecedence graph is used in combination with checkpointing and volatile sender-based message logging to simultaneously achieve low failure-fre...
متن کاملThe Cost of Recovery in Message Logging Protocols
ÐPast research in message logging has focused on studying the relative overhead imposed by pessimistic, optimistic, and causal protocols during failure-free executions. In this paper, we give the first experimental evaluation of the performance of these protocols during recovery. Our results suggest that applications face a complex trade-off when choosing a message logging protocol for fault to...
